Terrifying Doubt

October 28, 2015

“Let what you see drive you to the precipice of unbelief. Let what you feel bring you to the brink of despair.

If I exist, if I am good, if My story is loving and My plan is on course, My Spirit will speak into the deep place in your heart that only terrifying doubt renders accessible.

And in that place I will anchor you in hope.”

Dr. Larry Crabb, God’s Love Letters to You, Page 80

Questions for Reflection:
• In what ways do you buffer yourself against facing the darkness of doubt and the pain of despair rather than bringing them to God?
• Have you considered that embracing, rather than managing, struggles with unbelief and desolation may be an opportunity for the Holy Spirit to penetrate your heart more deeply?
• What is stirred in you at the thought that unbelief and despair are the place in which God can deepen your hope?
• Ask the Holy Spirit to work in your heart, regardless of your current struggles or lack of them, to anchor your heart more firmly in God’s character.
