We Cannot Generate True Passion for God by an Act of Will

May 2, 2012

“We cannot generate true passion for God by an act of will.  No formulas will produce the passion we’re after.  Seasons of fasting, regular time in the Word, disciplined resistance to temptation, generous giving, exuberant worship–these are all good things, but they are not enough to fill us with passion for Christ.

“True passion for our Lord is a work of the Holy Spirit.”

Larry Crabb, Finding God, Page 53

Question for Reflection:
How has the Holy Spirit developed your passion for Christ?
When you’ve tried to generate passion on your own what was the result?

  1. So, so, so true. Doesn’t stop many from trying though 🙂 Instead, the result is disillusionment, left wondering if God is real. We exchange our failure to fulfill God’s law by works for “Christian/spiritual works”. All along, failing to realise that God first loved us, that His desire is for us, to bless us and that it is by His work of Grace alone. In Romans 5 we read, how God has poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. We cannot generate this, or work ourselves into a stupor. So what do we do? Humbly accept His Word to us, accept His desire for us, accept His love towards us, take God at His Word and rest in this Truth as Truth.

“Humbly accept His Word to us, accept His desire for us, accept His love towards us, take God at His Word and rest in this Truth as Truth”. All are “Acts of Will”. We cannot even generate a passion for the Holy Spirit unless that generation comes from Him. Waiting, emptiness and loneliness seem to be the alternative until and unless ‘something’ happens that generates an authentic passion. That is scary.
